A hotel drug bust led by Detective Tony Church (Burt Reynolds) goes fatally wrong when his fellow detectives are slaughtered and $2,000,000 lands in the killer's hands. Fortunately for him, a chance encounter introduces Alex to retired poker legend, Tommy Vinson (Burt Reynolds). Tommy was at the top of his game twenty years ago but gave it all up in order to save his family. Upon meeting Alex, Tommy realizes he can regain his own self-confidence, pride and a poker championship title by turning Alex into his protégé. The two pair up and master every tournament they enter. The winning streak and friendship between the two is eventually thwarted by the interference of a Las Vegas call girl, Michelle (Shannon Elizabeth). The pair eventually part ways and separately prepare for the World Poker Tour…where only one will take home the championship title.

New Orleans, Louisiana…1939. After escaping from a dog pound, junkyard German shepherd Charlie B. Barkin is double-crossed and killed by his old gambling partner, a pit bull named Carface Malone. Finding himself at the great pet cemetery in the sky without a good deed to his name, Charlie is returned to Earth, where a little orphan girl (who can speak to dogs and predict race winners) comes to rely upon him for help. Charlie sees that he can use the girl as a way to regain his old business and get revenge against Carface. But instead, Charlie learns that there is something else much more valuable, something which he missed in life the first time around... Love.

Gator McKlusky (Burt Reynolds) has been convicted of running moonshine whiskey. He is offered a chance of release--if he will serve as an informer and help catch his one-time cohorts. Gator accepts, but only to get out of jail. He has another motive…he believes that the crooked sheriff (Ned Beatty) murdered his younger brother, a civil rights activist. With Louise Latham, Diane Ladd and a young Laura Dern (Diane lad's real-life daughter) in her film debut. Joseph Sargent directed with his usual skill and zest.
