Solid, but won't blow you away

I'm a fan of director David Ayer and his Los Angeles-set crime dramas. I loved Training Day and the underrated Harsh Times (which featured a brilliant Christian Bale performance). Street Kings, while engaging and worth watching, isn't his best. The primary flaw is how formulaic it is. This is the first time Keanu Reeves has played protagonist Tom Ludlow, but you know the character: conflicted, intense LA cop who doesn't play by the rules. You've also seen the plot play out before: a few good cops go against the many corrupt ones to solve a crime. So don't expect originality or many surprises. What you CAN expect and enjoy is Reeves' solid performance (he's not the most rounded actor, but he shines in certain roles), as well as many colorful supporting turns (rap star Common is very intense in a small role), and Ayer's sharp direction and detailed vision of Los Angeles. So, all in all, Street Kings is solid entertainment. It's well-acted and directed and fun. Just don't expect Academy Award-caliber material or much depth or originality. Concentrate on enjoying the cool ride.

BAD TASTE

basically, if you have never heard of this film, nor seen it, then you can read every 4 and 5-star review for this garbage and spin it around to mean the exact opposite. performances from the cast of rappers is wooden and half-a$$3d. hugh laurie mustve gotten a nice paycheck to be in this garbage, and forrest whitaker can say goodbye to the academy awards for a while with his over-the-top and uninspired performance. keanu reeves was miscast as the cliche cop on the "wrong side" of the law. script is terrible. bad dialogue ripped from majority of the other good-cop/bad-cop movies music is just as bad as the acting. seriously, ppl, everyone has their opinion, and some are we-tah-did. to call this film "the best of the year" or the "best [youve] seen this year" either means you have limited taste or insight in other genres , or no taste at all. stop-loss is better than this, and even an uwe boll flick could pass as viable entertainment than this cheap ghetto street trash labled a hardcore cop film.
