Strays (2023)

Director: Josh Greenbaum
Release Date:

Plucky pup Reggie (Will Ferrell) thought he and his owner Doug (Will Forte) were playing an innocent game of fetch. It isn't until he meets Bug (Jamie Foxx), a streetwise stray who says only suckers have owners, that Reggie realizes his miserable master intentionally abandoned him in the big city. With two more pooches adding fuel to his furry fire, Reggie goes from cute to cunning as he and Bug concoct a crazy scheme to get back to Doug and give him a big bite between his legs. Revenge has never been this riotous, or this irreverent, as the hilariously absurd antics of these four furballs turn typical animal adventures totally upside down. Forget everything you know about "dog movie" drama because this is one journey home that's off its leash and over the top.

It’s Got Heart to It!

The film revels in its unapologetic R-rated crass, but it isn’t without its charm and bizarrely wholesome moments. The characters themselves share a good chemistry with each other, and the developments they experience is enjoyable. You could say said developments are clichéd, and while they are, that doesn’t automatically make them bad. “Strays” isn’t trying to win any prestigious awards. It only wants to have some dumb but heartfelt fun in its own unique, unabashed way. It knows how extremely but humorously raunchy it is and wears it like a badge of honor. Watch for the simplistic, raunchy fun, and stay for some immensely satisfying revenge and sweet dog bonding!

Mad at myself for watching this

It isn’t great. It isn’t that funny. There were only a few scenes in it that made me laugh a little. Definitely not for kids, so for parents seeing talking animals in this, don’t let your kids watch unless you want that Monday morning call from their school about the new words your kid couldn’t have waited until Wednesday to use at recess. As far as adults watching this, if you found that movie with the talking food voiced by Seth Rogen and friends funny then you will probably like this movie the same. It reminds me of those movies that get released when there is nothing better for a studio to spend money on and they are banking on the names to carry it through the box office. Luckily I streamed it first.
