Moby Dick

Director: John Huston
Release Date:

John Huston's 1956 Moby Dick remains admirably faithful to its source. Though slightly intimidated by the sermon delivered by Father Mapple (Orson Welles in a brilliant one-take cameo), who warns that those who challenge the sea are in danger of losing their souls, Ishmael nonetheless signs on to the Pequod, a whaling ship captained by the brooding, one-legged Ahab (Gregory Peck). In an obsessive pursuit of Moby Dick, the great white whale to whom he lost his leg, Ahab's dementia spreads throughout the crew members, who maniacally join their captain in his final, fatal attack upon the elusive, enigmatic Moby Dick.

COULD'VE BEEN BETTER

Gregory Peck's acting abilities can only go so far. Had it had a little more action involving Moby Dick, I would consider giving it 4 stars.

Horrible.. Horrible..Horrible.

I love this book. I loved the film when it was rleased...but this ITunes version is of such poor quality.. (I rented thr High Def. version) that it was not enjoyable at all. The entire screen was mostly BLACK for most of the film. I adjusted my TV but the production value was so low, that it did not make a difference. Probably my last rental from apple until they come up with some sort of fix.

A magnificent film. Period

The dubious reviews that complain of the limited acting abilities of Gregory Peck or the lack of more action are the rambling s of morons. This film is a gem of acting, direction, writing and cinematography. The book upon which it is based is such a treasure that deviation from it to give more "action" would be liking adding a mustache to the Mona Lisa to give it more character.

Moby Dick

Wow saw this when I was a kid, it was great then. I had to read the tome in school and this follows the book down to the very smallest detail. Don't take my word for it read the book. You can get it here I bet.

My Favorite Movie of All Time!

This movie is my favorite of all time, and I was ecstatic to find it on iTunes. Don’t listen the bad reviews, they aren’t true. This movie is flawless, and Gregory Peck does a masterful job portraying Captain Ahab. Give this movie a watch, you won’t regret it!
