A Decent Ending to the Series.

Like so many others, I grew up a huge fan of the Indiana Jones trilogy; And also like so many others, I was very disappointed by Crystal Skull. It seemed like that would be the end of the series. Then, in 2016, Indiana Jones 5 was announced with an anticipated release date of July 2019. News of constant delays, script rewrites, Disney’s recent treatment of other legacy characters, and release date pushbacks, all had me skeptical. But I still bought a ticket, hoping for something better than Crystal Skull. Long story short, it’s…okay. Better than expected, really. Just to get this out of the way, this movie probably came out 10 years too late. While Ford is in great shape, he looks every day of his 78-ish years (during filming). Compare him here to Crystal Skull, and you’ll see the difference. You might notice his voice wasn’t de-aged with his face for the opening segment, but it still works. Several characters aren’t needed or are underutilized, chase scenes run too long, and I’m fairly certain the entire third act was reshot. Having said that, the opening sequence feels like a mini Indiana Jones movie that should have come out in the mid-90’s. This scene, by itself, was worth the price of admission. I don’t want to give away too much, but overall, Helena is a smug and obnoxious. I’m sure Indy would have straight up shot her in his younger days. The movie would have also benefited if Sallah and Marion had come along. Other than that, Ford falls right back into character, and Mads makes for an excellent villain. While the third act feels forced, and the time travel explanation is kind of glossed over, this is definitely a more enjoyable film than Crystal Skull. Director James Mangold is no Steven Spielberg, but he didn’t embarrass himself, either. Also, John Williams contributes yet another fantastic soundtrack. I expected the worst, but would give it 3 out of 5 stars. It was a fitting end for the character, and I recommend checking it out. On a side note, here’s my ranking of the series from best to worst: Temple of Doom, Last Crusade, Raiders, Dial, then Crystal Skull.

Better than crystal skull but…

Big miss on what could have been. Should have focused on Indy and salah’s relationship as old men longing for one more adventure. “I miss the desert. I miss the sea. But most of all, I miss waking up and not knowing what amazing adventure the day might bring.” Definitely the best line in the whole movie and should have focused on that.

It’s surprisingly great

I didn’t expect much, today’s culture celebrates misery and the buzz about this from people who’d never seen it (months before it came out) was about how horrible it was. It’s actually excellent. You will want more. Better than Skull and Temple, as good as Crusade. Don’t believe or empower the haters. It gives you reasons to love Indy again.

Thumbs up

Way better than the Crystal Skull.

Good Sendoff

Another great adventure. Not as good and Raiders of the Lost Ark or the Last Crusade, but worth watching. His annoying sidekick makes the movie annoying at times.
