I’m an avid Coen brothers fan and also love a lot of the movies that haven’t been successful at the box office, like Hudsucker Proxy, so I thought I’d like Hail, Caesar despite the lukewarm reviews. Alas, no. The movie plays like a series of cameos, failing to gather momentum. Perhaps the weakest point of the movie is Josh Brolin, who plays what is more or less the main character, but there’s very little of interest in the character or in Brolin’s portrayal of him. It’s a void at the center of the film. There are moments of amusement, but they are far and few between; most of it felt stale and uninspired. I think you can skip this one. I wish I had.
Hail, Caesar: The Epitome of Artsy Movies @CWFMAN
This is the hardest review I have ever written. No joke. On with the review: "Hail, Caesar" is the newest comedy by the Coen Brothers and it is painfully obvious. The plot synopsis says it is about the abduction of a movie star. I'm 99% sure it isn't. As I watched the movie I realized that it was more about Josh Brolin's Eddie Mannix, a good man forced to be a tough guy. The movie itself does lack a powerful plot drive as it is simply about a few pretty rough days at Capitol Pictures. I don't have a problem with that, though it makes your average movie goer a bit confused. The "story" does acclompish the Coen Brothers' goal: to make an artsy love letter to '50s Hollywood. In doing so they made a few fantastic movie within a movie sequences that really felt like films of the time period. Not to mention, the sets and cars created a beautiful '50s aesthetic that really brings you into their world. The acting in the film is mediocre at times but Josh Brolin, George Clooney, and Alden Ehrenreich really shine and give interesting performances. George Clooney's character, Baird Whitlock, is a great character that you can tell Clooney enjoyed portraying. However, the spotlight should most definitely go to the deserving Alden Ehrenreich whose performance as Hobie Doyle is one the better ones I've seen in a long time. Hobie was such an interesting and powerfully original character that it took a special something to embody him. Aside from the acting, the movie is hilarious as it is, in some ways, a self parody. There are tons of hilarious moments that were so well written that I couldn't believe I was laughing at them! But, this movie does require a very specific sense of humor to be enjoyed as its gags are much more thought out and intelligent than that of "Daddy's Home." In general, "Hail, Caesar" is a fantastic and artistic love letter to '50s cinema that is filled with great characters and requires a movie fanatic's mindset to be enjoyed. OVERALL RATING: 4/5
High expectations but hard landing @RRDragon44
When I initially viewed the trailer, I saw this movie as something great. The actors were of sound character and the humor looked smart. Relating to British humor and Wes Anderson films, the sort of quirkiness looked ideal. The issue with this film was that it sincerely fell flat. I don't typically post reviews. It's in my opinion that an individual should be able to make up their own mind about the quality of the movie. This movie, however, was, by all terms of the word, awful. There's a true reason to why this stayed in theaters only for a short limited amount of time. I'd say if you must view it, redbox the film. If you're inclined to buy or rent off iTunes you be met with a subpar product that will not do much for you. Truth..

Sometimes, you just need a beautifully done movie with a deft mix of movie magic, humor, communist plots, synchronized swimming, and big over-the-top musical productions... having been working for the past two years in a Middle Eastern country stuck in the middle ages (no cinema or arts), this was just what I needed!
