Out of the Furnace

Director: Scott Cooper
Release Date:

From Scott Cooper, the critically-acclaimed writer and director of Crazy Heart, comes a gripping and gritty drama about family, fate, circumstance, and justice. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. The police fail to crack the case, so - with nothing left to lose - Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his brother. The impressive cast of Christian Bale and Casey Affleck are rounded out by Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, Zoe Saldana, Sam Shepard and Willem Dafoe.

Very real and good.

Good movie with lots of great actors. My reason for reviewing is not so much to Encourage others to watch this film, but to warn them off Rotten Tomatoes. This review process can be kind of tricky. There are 168 rviews on this and who is to say they are not friends of relatives of people who can profit from the sale or rental of a flick here. that is why i alway put my faith in RT... until recently. this movie deserves more. I watched Hunger Games 2 and it put me to sleep the whole way, yet it somehow got an 89 from RT.American Hustle got 93 and I refuse to watch it. I can understand giving a high score to an artsy fartsy movie that puts me to sleep or a docudrama that is suppose to expose something wrong being done somewhere else in the world, but this kid watches a film for one reason and one reason only. To be entertained. This kept me entertained because it had plenty of character development and evry scene in the filmm had a reason. It either gave you insight to the characters or it gave you a situation that would simmer until a future date. Ay no time was I bored. Goodbye RT you have fooled me for the last time.

Out of the Furnace

My expectations for this film were not high based on articles I had read about it. Having seen it, it was sold short by the critics. Christian Bale and Woody Harrelson were excellent. Casey Affleck was believable as the returning war veteran unable to find a job to suit him. To me, Forest Whitaker seemed miscast as the investigating officer. Zoe Saldana gave a decent performance as the ex-girlfriend. If I could award 4 & a half stars I would. Not quite a ????? film. Enjoyed it.

Pretty Good

Pretty good movie. There are a few lulls between any real action or important parts. As far as other review saying it's "extremely violent," it isn't. Not in my opinion. Yes the fight scenes are really accurate to the fighting I've experienced, but nothing beyond what you see in most R-rated action movies. Anyways, worth a watch. My opinion, rent. Don't buy.

Good

Deer hunter on steroids. Appreciated the film. Kept me watching.

The Movie was very good, and the gore and violence claim is completely off base

I just have to say, the "critics" from Rotten Tomatoes are completely out of touch with what real world America is like. This story has a heartbeat of underdeveloped and uncared for America. The trauma those effected by it walk in every single day. The bond between brothers who were born into a world who offered them nothing. Gangsters and dirtbags who feel they can bully everyone who the lay eyes on. Broken hearts, broken dreams. It is a film about life, not a film about some artsy fartsy topic that the disengaged, martini drinking, high-rise flat party goer critics that cannot see past their own name and their own reputation love to see. This was a good movie and I recommend it to anybody who wants too see a movie that relates to real life. And like I said in the header, the gore was non existent. Blood, yes, during some fights. I have seen movies with a lot more blood and gore that these critic, grrrr, loved. Hey Apple: Let us rate the raters. I bet that would change things a bit. There needs to be accountability with these guys. I have no faith in their rating system…. AT…. ALL
