I've been a working newspaper writer since 1992, and while there are more acclaimed movies about journalism (I particularly like Good Night, And Good Luck), The Paper is the film that gets the day to day feel of the newsroom the most right of any film I've seen in the genre. The familiar newsroom archetypes are all there, the budget meetings where news that doesn't affect the readership is seen as having significantly less value, the high-stress, the self-importance brushing up against the genuinely important work: It's all there. The only scene that strikes an off note for me is the struggle at the end. Without spoiling anything, while there are emergency shut-offs in that sort of room, they're normally not kept under lock and key, because the contents of said room are dangerous -- people get their arms ripped off doing that work -- so the rolling around struggling for the key to unlock the shut-off controls was a little silly. The rest of the film, though, is great and for a film that was mostly intended as a lightweight treat, it holds up very well, even all these years later.

It's also covers themes about priorities in life and the consequences for the choices we make. Great ensemble cast includes heavyweights like Duvall and Close plus the excellent Michael Keaton, Randy Quaid, Marisa Tomei and Jason Alexander. Highly entertaining tale of ethics, ambition and family.

Two blocks from the Mizzou journalism school was a great video store that always had anything you could want, no matter how obscure or artsy or foreign. The exception was this movie. They stopped carrying it because their copies always got stolen by j-school students (or faculty!) who couldn’t bear to return it.
