The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)

Director: John McTiernan
Release Date:

Thrill-seeking billionaire Thomas Crown (Brosnan) loves nothing more than courting disaster and winning! So when his world becomes too stiflingly safe, he pulls off his boldest stunt ever: stealing a priceless painting in broad daylight from one of Manhattan's most heavily guarded museums. But his post-heist excitement soon pales beside an even greater challenge: Catherine Banning (Russo). A beautiful insurance investigator hired to retrieve the artwork, Catherine's every bit as intelligent, cunning and hungry for adventure as he is. And just when Thomas realizes he's finally met his match, she skillfully leads him into a daring game of cat and mouse that's more intoxicating and dangerous than anything either of them has ever experienced before!

Sexy, Classy Remake

This movie is elegant, clever, sexy, and beautifully shot. The script was written by one person (with one additional person doing the heist scenes), and the story flows much more smoothly than those scripts written by committee and edited by test audiences. The actors have great chemistry, and the the music provides a perfect backdrop for the adventures. Be sure to watch it widescreen because the pan-and-scan version cuts out huge amounts of the frame. All I could think watching it was "I could totally live like that." (In my dreams!)

Dogs at Cards

This is a fantastic movie simply because it manages to be entertaining, romantic, and daring without being pretentious. Pierce Brosnan exemplifies the suave, cunning Thomas Crown, the charming sidelong glance, the private smile at the remark of, "What, you own the building or something?", without bringing Bond into it. Rene Russo is breathtaking as Catherine Banning. Sure, she's not the youngest, perkiest Barbie-doll starlet out there, but she brings a sexy, intelligent allure to this movie that made me gasp at the thought that, "What? She's 50?!" The setting of glamorous NYC and Crown's tropical getaway, coupled with an intelligent plot and, ahem, interesting costume design for Mrs. Russo, make this film as stylish and professional as the businessman with the bowling hat, and its addition to iTunes is the apple balanced atop his head.

Great remake of a classic original

Thoughtfully directed by John McTiernan, this update to a classic Steve McQueen film is really slick, smart, and sexy. A top notch cast and a great script about a millionaire's theft of priceless artwork is worthy of a download. It's one of those movies that you come across on TV one night and are compelled to watch it to the end, again and again.

A Personal Favorite

I've owned this movie for years and there's nothing better. It's a love story, as well as a mind boggler. It will make you question it to the end. If you have the chance to see it, don't pass it up. You won't regret it!

Classy, timeless and inspiring

This is one movie where the re-make not only does justice to the original but for a new generation surpasses its origins by showcasing perfect performances by Brosnan and Russo in what is a set piece of classy cinematography and witty repartoire. It effortlesly combines the intriguing plot with moments of great chemistry between Russo and Brosnan to weave a very intriguing but playful plot accompanied by a fantastic soundtrack. An aspirational feel good movie with class.
