The Left Handed Gun

Director: Arthur Penn
Release Date:

This unusually gritty Western about gunslinger William Bonney, better known as "Billy the Kid," portrays Bonney as he is historically known to have been: illiterate, unintelligent and homicidal. When a rancher treats Bonney with kindness for the first time in his hard life, Bonney becomes devoted to the man. When the rancher is killed, Bonney goes on a murderous rampage to avenge his friend, which leads head-long to a confrontation with Pat Garrett, the man who would finally gun him down. Based on the play by Gore Vidal, this Western classic stars Academy Award-winner Paul Newman ("Message in a Bottle," "The Hudsucker Proxy") as William Bonney, Lita Milan ("I Mobster," "Never Love a Stranger"), and John Dehner("The Right Stuff," "The Boys from Brazil"). This was the first movie directed by Academy Award-nominee Arthur Penn ("Bonnie and Clyde," "Little Big Man").

Unvarnished, honest movie

Of all the actors who've protaryed Billy the Kid, Newman seems to have nailed the portrayal. The man, William Bonney, did not have a "full deck" ... neither did the young guys he hung out with. But the director is playing with a full deck. Good story-telling. This is relational for a western.

Pretty bad movie

Selling this movie for any more than .99 is a joke. Everything about this movei is low budget, cheap and poorly executed. You may be blinded by the Paul Newman shine he puts on things but don't be fooled. This is not a crap movei because it's from an earlier time, it was crap when it came out. The plot is very rushed, the acting is bad and the story is slapped together. This is the movie Emilio Estevez used to make the Young Guns movies, which tell the same story, (sometimes with intentionally similar looking actors), but comparatively much much better. There's no novelty here at all. If the price goes down to a buck, get it, but take my advice and don't pay more.

Newman

When watching a Paul Newman film, always look for Newman's interpretation of the character he portrays, this is the key to Newman's greatness, not the script, nor direction...
