a gem of 70's cinema

terrific example of everything wonderful about how gritty 70's cinema was. excellent performances all around. unsettling and effective use of sparse scoring. jane fonda deserved the heck out of her oscar for best actress for this performance. wonderful film!

Understated thriller of the 70's

I love this film! It was truly produced well between the air of creepiness in the cinematography, certain settings of the film and the soundtrack! Sutherland is truly a great actor. If you like this film, you should also see "Don't Look Now"......

Subtle but deadly

One of the all-time great murder mysteries to come out of the early 70s free love and drug scene. Outstanding acting from both leads. Tension builds slowly to a stunning ending.

Sleazy, Sexy and Stylish

In Klute, straight-laced detective John Klute (Donald Sutherland) must find a business executive who has disappeared into the sleaze of early 1970's New York. With the help of a high-class call girl (Jane Fonda), he gathers clues from a world defined by sexual desire and secrecy. Fonda delivers a great performance and the character of Klute may remind Ross MacDonald fans of his famous detective, Lew Archer. Although I dislike romances, I was as interested in the romance between Sutherland and Fonda as the mystery. It makes a great double feature with Taxi Driver - both films deal with similar themes and have the same setting, but these two masterpieces couldn't be more different. Highly Recommended.

A good, if rather seedy classic

This is not as much of a gritty mystery movie as it is a musty one. It is slow and has a remote, detached feel. Fonda does a good job, as does Sutherland, but I feel that both roles were miscast. Between Sutherland's creepyness, Fonda's shag haircut and way-too-formal way of talking, and the typically half-a decade behind the times "pop tunes", there are things that make this movie a bit off. I think that in the hands of a better filmmaker and with a different cast this could have been much better.
