Ep. 494: How Do the Miracles and Redemption of Pesach Empower Us in Facing Our Current Challenges?

Rabbi Jacobson will discuss the following topics:What does Pesach teach us today?

How do the miracles and redemption of Pesach empower us in dealing with our current challenges?
What is the main theme of Pesach?
Is it the joy of freedom from slavery or the lessons in humility from eating the matzoh?
Why don’t we do a thorough internal cleansing of any chometz left in our bodies before Pesach?
What is the best way to run a Seder?
Is it better to have an enjoyable experience even if we compromise some of the more stringent details?
Why are we constantly reminded that we were slaves in Egypt and idol worshippers when we’re not supposed to remind someone of their past sins?
Is the Egyptian exile a deeper concealment than that of the tzimtzum harishon?
Why are we not all wealthy today as the Jews wer

UFO Encounters Ep31 | USAF Chase UFOs Over Newfoundland

This week I'm talking to Graeme Rendall about his book 'Chasing Shadows: Aerial UFO Encounters 1955-1956'.By January 1955, the United States Air Force had already established and terminated two official UFO investigation programs, and was now well into its third, Project Blue Book. Thousands of pages of witness testimony, reports, and analysis had already been typed up and yet little if anything was known about UFOs. These strange objects and lights were written off as planets, weather balloons, and other aircraft, whilst unidentified radar contacts were labelled as nothing more than weather-related phenomenon (“anomalous propagation”). The official USAF response regarding UFOs was that they simply did not exist.Yet reports of sightings continued, reported by airline pilots, jet interceptor crews, and private plane owners across the world. Chasing Shadows: Aerial UFO Encounters 1955-1956 describes in deta

A Quick Cairo Trip

Episode 32: Show Notes.

After a two-plus year-long wait, Tom finally used his Qatar booking credit from the pandemic (just in time before the booking expired!). Even though he wasn’t excited about the trip before departure, his wonderful experience of Cairo made him question his initial reservations. Tom details his airport experience in Canada, why he chose to fly out from there instead of America, and whether buying a cheaper ticket to fly from Canada is worth the hassle. He also shares his thoughts on the new Chase Sapphire Lounge in LaGuardia, his inflight experience of Qatar’s Qsuite, what he did during his Doha layover, and everything he loved about being in Cairo for the very first time. In addition, we discuss the convenience of using tour services to expedite airport arrivals and departures in certain countries, the sights that Tom visited in Cairo, whether

William Ury: Becoming a Possibilist

A healthy relationship—whether that's between two people or two nations—is not one in which everyone agrees; it's one where it's safe for differences, and we have the skills to honor all of our needs. In this podcast, Tami Simon speaks with renowned mediator and bestselling author, William Ury, about his new book, Possible and the insights he has gleaned through more than four decades of conflict-resolution across the globe.

If you only listen to one podcast this year, may it be this one! Tami and William discuss: Meeting animosity with curiosity; shifting perspective and the metaphor of the balcony; self-observation; how more silence leads to more cooperation; the 3A trap: avoid, accommodate, or attack; the link between creativity and conflict; why negotiation is more about listening than speaking; reaching "second order agreement"; creating a "golden bridge" across our divides; universal nee

A Bit of Optimism

Happily Friended with author Rhaina Cohen

Society treats marriage like the end goal of human intimacy. Platonic friends can never be as important as romantic partners. What would life look like if we made friendship the goal? Journalist and producer Rhaina Cohen tackles this question in her book The Other Significant Others. She tells the stories of people who made platonic friends the closest people in their lives, doing things together like buying houses, executing a will, and raising children. I wanted to talk with Rhaina because redefining what friendship means in our lives lets us connect in new and deeper ways outside the rigid boundaries of a marriage or relationship. And it might take the pressure off our romantic partners to fulfill every one of our social needs.This...is A Bit of Optimism. To learn more about Rhaina and her work, check out:

Practical Wisdom

Massimo Pigliucci

Epicurus on sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll

“When I say that pleasure is the goal of living I do not mean the pleasures of libertines or the pleasures inherent in positive enjoyment, as is supposed by certain persons who are ignorant of our doctrine or who are not in agreement with it or who interpret it perversely.I mean, on the contrary, the pleasure that consists in freedom from bodily pain and mental agitation. The pleasant life is not the product of one drinking party after another or of sexual intercourse with women and boys or of the seafood and other delicacies afforded by a luxurious table. On the contrary, it is the result of sober thinking – namely, investigation of the reasons for every act of choice and aversion and elimination of those false ideas about the gods and death which are the chief source of mental disturbances.” (Letter to Menoeceus, II) This is a public episode. Meaningful Life Skills with Rabbi Simon Jacobson

When Freedom is Slavery

Freedom is one of our most cherished values. It is a monumental achievement of our times. The human aspiration for freedom, the desire to live as a free people, reflects the deepest longing of the soul, and is a vivid departure, standing in stark contrast to the days when monarchs and tyrants ruled.
But what does freedom truly mean? Is it merely the lack of physical confinement, the absence of bars and chains, or does it go beyond that? Consider this: In our contemporary world, we are surrounded by communication technologies designed to liberate and emancipate us. However, how many of us find ourselves entrapped and addicted to these gadgets? We live in an era of prosperity and unprecedented comforts, yet we grapple with more addictions than ever, be they physical, emotional, or psychological. Freedom, while a beautiful concept, also comes with its challenges. Even if we are free from external control, we may still find ourselves oppr

Making Peace Visible

Jamil Simon

How do we design for peace?

On Making Peace Visible we usually focus on stories -- narratives about peace and conflict that are told in the news, on social media, and shared in our collective zeitgeist. We’ve seen examples of how storytelling can both stoke the fire of war and encourage peaceful dialogue. In this episode, we look at a different, but related way of creating space for peace: design. Our guest Cynthia Smith is the Curator for Socially Responsible Design at the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York City. She spent five years creating the remarkable exhibition Designing Peace, which includes 40 design proposals, initiatives and interventions from 25 countries, including maps, images, textiles, video games and film. From a teeter-totter installed on the US-Mexico border fence to a crowd-sourced reimagining of war-damaged Damascus, the works in Designing Peace coupled with Smith’s vision present a world of possibility. Designing Peace is on view at the Museum

After a recent poll, I found two main who businesses don't create consistent video content, firstly, understanding the benefits of video and second, the time it takes to create it.  There are many reasons why businesses need video for their growth, such as increased engagement and reach, improved conversion rates, enhanced customer experience, and increased return on investment.  Video can work for businesses if they have a plan and strategy in place. I outline my five P process for creating effective video content that maximizes return on investment and achieves business goals. The five P's are plan, produce, publish, promote, and Performance. I also share tips on making the most of your film day and selecting the right platform for your target audience and goals. Highlights:

Cooking and Baking with Cannabis for 420

Today is 4/20, and to celebrate we’re taking culinary cannabis to new highs with cannabis baker Christina Wong of Baking with Chickens. I personally adore cooking and baking using the aromatic oils in marijuana called terpenes as a flavor profile to pair with, and Christina definitely shares that passion, too. She’s worked with all sorts of folks in the cannabis industry like Papa & Barkley, MedMen, and Raw Garden, and also hosts a cooking channel on YouTube called Baking with Chickens, where she showcases the other secret to her delicious baked goods —  fresh eggs from her backyard chooks. Christina is launching a culinary cannabis baking show that kicks off today, and I know she’s going to be a wealth of knowledge for us as we learn how to cook with cannabis for the 420 holiday.

The red and blue coat

The red and blue coat
Once there were two boys who were great friends, and they were determined to remain that way forever. When they grew up and got married, they built their houses facing one another across a small path.
One day, a trickster from the village decided to fool them. He dressed himself in a two-colour coat that was divided down the middle. So, one side of the coat was red, and the other side was blue.
The trickster wore this coat and walked along the narrow path between the houses of the two friends. They were each working opposite each other in their fields. The trickster made enough noise as he passed them to make sure that each of them would look up and see him passing.
At the end of the day, one friend said to the other, "Wasn't that a beautiful red coat that man was wearing today?"
"No", the other replied. "It was a blue coat."
"I saw the man clearly as he walked b
