In Conversation with Dolores Huerta

Dolores Huerta is a giant within the labor movement. She got her start in the movement early, pivoting from her work as a young teacher in California’s Central Valley community organizing when she saw how her students and their families were struggling. She hasn’t stopped since, and has spent the last seven decades fighting for farmworkers rights, including for fair wages, safer working conditions, and the very right for workers to collectively organize. She’s helped shape the environmental justice movement in the United States, and has proven a tireless advocate for civil rights and women’s rights. She is perhaps best known for co-founding what would become the United Farm Workers Association with Cesar Chavez in 1962s, and currently, she serves as the founder and president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, which advocates for social justice by empowering marginalized communities through grassroots organizing, civic engagement, and educat

Disability Movement Tension Spots – Pushing Limits – March 29, 2024

People with mental, emotional and cognitive disabilities face significant limitations in their daily life.  They’re considered disabled under the law.  Yet, some people with mental health conditions feel their needs are ignored by those with mobility and other physical disabilities.   And, some people with mental health issues choose not to identify as disabled due the stigma of the category.

We talk to Brian Hollander from Disability Rights California, who identifies himself as someone with mental health challenges.  Hollander gives his perspectives on why there seems to be division in the community and the steps both groups can take to work together.

Natasha Vita More at the AND Festival Salon
Also, we talk to “Megan” a community organizer from L. A. about the journey she is on in becoming comfortable with identifying as someone with a mental health disability.

Chris Bernadel on Haiti

This week on CounterSpin:
U.S. corporate media’s story about Haiti is familiar. Haiti, according to various recent reports, has “whipped from one calamity to another.” The country is a “cataclysm of hunger and terror,” “teetering on the brink of collapse,” “spiraling deeper into chaos” or else “descending into gang-fueled anarchistic chaos.” It’s “become a dangerously rudderless country.” According to one Florida paper’s editorial, “Haiti’s unrest” is now “becoming our problem,” as Floridians and the U.S. “struggle to help people in Haiti, although history suggests there are no answers.”
According to The Washington Post, there is one answer. They made space for a former ambassador to explain that 20 years ago in Haiti, “the worst outcomes were avoided through decisive American intervention. Today’s crisis might require it as well.”
We talk about what has to change — including Western media presentations that ignore or erase even recent

Lessons in Self-Managed Abortion

While the Supreme Court considers restricting abortion pills, feminists in the Global South have shown the way forward for safe abortions outside of the law. Sociologist Naomi Braine has documented the efforts of networks and collectives of activists, some formed in the struggles against dictatorship in Latin America, who provide information, pills, and support in ending unwanted pregnancies without the need for medical personnel.
