First UN aid mission to Sudan reveals dramatic human cost of war

The war between rival militaries in Sudan doesn’t get the international attention it deserves, UN humanitarians said on Thursday, as they described the terrible human cost of nearly 12 months of conflict across the country.According to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) 24 million children in Sudan have been exposed to the conflict which shows no sign of letting up - and a staggering 730,000 are severely acutely malnourished. Jill Lawler - Chief of Field Operations in Sudan for UNICEF - is one of the UN humanitarians leading the aid effort for those in need, including in Omdurman city near Khartoum. She told UN News’s Daniel Johnson, what she had seen.

داخل إحدى القاعات في مقر الأمم المتحدة، تَحلق شباب من مختلف الدول العربية حول مائدة نقاش كانت حافلة بالعديد من الموضوعات والقضايا التي تمسهم وتشغل بالهم. تلك الجلسة كانت إحدى فعاليات منتدى الشباب التابع للمجلس الاقتصادي والاجتماعي الذي امتد على مدى ثلاثة أيام ما بين 16-18 نيسان/أبريل 2024.جلسات عديدة جمعت شبابا من مختلف أنحاء العالم، تم تقسميها بحسب الإقليم أو الموضوع كما أوضح لنا د. سامح كامل، الرئيس الدولي لمجموعة الأمم المتحدة الرئيسية للأطفال والشباب التي شاركت في تنظيم المنتدى. وقال سامح كامل إن إحدى الجلسات كانت مخصصة للمنطقة العربية، وشهدت مشاركة "مجموعة مميزة جدا من الشباب يمثلون بلدانا عربية مختلفة وتحدثوا عن الواقع الذي يعيشه الشباب العربي اليوم".وتمحورت المناقشات حول مطالب الشباب وتطلعاتهم فيما يخص خمسة من أهداف التنمية المستدامة السبعة عشر. وتلك الأهداف الخمسة هي القضاء على الفقر، والقضاء على الجوع، والعمل المناخي، والسلام والعدالة والمؤسسات القوية، والشراكات ل

UN humanitarians carried out an emergency fact-finding mission to central Gaza’s Al-Aqsa Hospital on Christmas Day, in response to fears of mass casualties after reports that three refugee camps were hit by Israeli airstrikes.Doctors at the hospital, which was already at full capacity, reported seeing “100-plus patients” brought in with serious injuries in just the first 30 minutes, with around the same number of dead bodies.With ever decreasing space in the Strip to treat men, women and children needing urgent lifesaving care, many more will die, warned Sean Casey from the World Health Organization (WHO).Mr. Casey is the UN health agency’s Emergency Medical Teams coordinator who took part in that mission to central Gaza.
