A Way with Words: language, linguistics, and callers from all over

A Way with Words

Ring-Tailed Tooter - 22 February 2021

National Book Award winner Barry Lopez had wise advice for young writers. First, read widely and follow your curiosity. Second, travel or learn a foreign language. And third, find out what you truly believe, because if you're not writing from your beliefs, then you're just passing along information. And: if someone says they're going to plant flags at a gravesite, they may not mean what you think. That's because the word flag is also the name for a certain flower. Plus, if helicopter parents hover protectively around their kids . . . what do golf parents do? All that, along with in a brown study, pitcher-proud, ring-tailed ripsnorter, gleepers, clackers, a brain-busting take-off puzzle, thing like that and all, and there are no bones in ice cream. Ye gods and little fishes! Read full show notes, hear hundreds of free episodes, send your thoughts and questions, and learn more on the A Way with Words website: https://waywordradio.org/. Ema

Hamed: What good are you to them if you’re blind as a bat?

Sue: Everybody else will have crystal clear vision, so all I have to do is to put in an appearance. Things may not be as sharp as I’d like them to be, but I can still make out people and objects – as long as they’re really big.

Hamed: I don’t think your coworkers are going to want you to blindside them today with your strange behavior. You’re going to do more harm than good.

Transcript: Hi, I am Georgiana, your English teacher and founder of SpeakEnglishPodcast.com. And I am here to help you speak English fluently with no grammar and no textbooks. Today we are going to continue learning new phrasal verbs. This time with the verb TAKE. And with a point of view lesson, you will learn grammar in context without memorizing any boring rules. I’ll tell you a story several times from different grammar points. I can change the tense or the person. And like that, you will learn grammar in context. Ok. Let’s start! Most English learners tend to become overly concerned with how to learn phrasal verbs. A phrasal verb is just a verb and a particle. For example, “take after.”

In our car that is, because while we definitely enjoy shuffling around in a cab every now and then, if said cab happened to break down there is absolutely zero chance we would get out and help the driver push given the near 100 percent humidity.

Simple Stories in Spanish

Small Town Spanish Teacher

La Leyenda de Juan Diego y la Virgen de Guadalupe

This third season of Simple Stories in Spanish is focusing on legends. In the year 1531 the Virgen Mary appeared to humble Mexican peasant by the name of Juan Diego. She had a message for the bishop. Initially, he didn’t believe Juan Diego. He thought we has telling “mentiras” (lies), not “la verdad” (the truth). He asked for a “señal” (sign). Later, Juan Diego returned, and the Virgen’s image miraculously appeared on his tilma, or cloak. That image has become known as “La Virgen de Guadalupe” and is celebrated and honored every December. This religious legend repeats vocabulary such as “obispo” (bishop), “cura” (priest), “milagroso” (miraculous), and “iglesia” (church), The legend is mostly told in the past tense, with some present tense in the dialogue and at the end. No matter where you are in your language journey, stories will help you on your way. You can find a transcript of the story and read along at smalltownspanish

12 words in which we DO pronounce the final "E"

You probably know that an English word ends in -E, the -E is usually silent; we don’t pronounce it - like in the words date, cheese, fine, spoke, and rude. But there are a few exceptions! Many of these words came into English from other languages and so they don’t follow the typical trend of a silent E at the end. Repeat after me to learn 12 words in which we DO pronounce the final -E. I know that English pronunciation can be SO confusing with all these exceptions to the rules! If you want to improve your pronunciation fast, come join my American English Pronunciation Course. Inside it, we’ll do lots of practice so that you can master the sounds of the language and say them clearly. 055 – Could you kick a robot puppy?

Hello my lovely English learners! Lori here, your teacher from BetterAtEnglish.com. I love technology, so we’re talking about robots today, but not in the way you might expect. A lot of conversations about robots have to do with whether or not a robot or machine could ever develop genuine feelings or emotions. But today we’re going to be thinking about our own emotions and feelings toward robots, particularly empathy. Can we feel empathy toward robots? And if so, why?

Topic: Czech hunter reports rifle-stealing deer to police

Czech police are seeking help in an unusual case after a deer turned the tables on the hunters and snagged a pursuer’s rifle on his antlers before running away.

捷克警方正就一宗不尋常的案件尋求協助,一頭鹿在逃跑前用鹿角勾走一名追捕者的步槍,轉而佔了獵人們上風。

The deer, frightened by a dog, ran toward one of the hunting party, tore his sleeve and caught a strap of a 0.22 Hornet rifle on his antlers, police said on Tuesday.

警方週二表示,這頭鹿受一隻狗驚嚇,朝狩獵隊的一名獵人奔去,撕裂他的袖子,鹿角抓到一把點二二黃蜂彈口徑的步槍。

"The rifle, which the hunter had slung over his left arm - fortunately without ammo - slipped on the deer’s antlers and disappeared with him," the police said.

警方說,「這名獵人本來掛在左手臂的這把步槍─幸好沒彈藥─滑到鹿角上,隨著牠消失。」
