Jeff Koons, presented by BMW

Talk Art HOLIDAYS SPECIAL!!! This very special episode was recorded from Pace Gallery, New York!!! We are proud to collaborate again with BMW to bring you a conversation with iconic artist Jeff Koons. We discuss Jeff's passion for art which he discovered at an early age, we discuss his student years in Chicago and working for Ed Paschke, whose technicolor renderings of superheroes and other pop icons were an early source of inspiration. We learn of Koons’s first job at the Museum of Modern Art, and his first major works that invoked commodity fetishism: titled The New, they comprised vacuum cleaners displayed on or in Plexiglas boxes over grids of fluorescent light. We explore why he chose stainless steel and reflective surfaces within his most celebrated sculptures and how art can truly change lives.Jeff Koons’ latest collaboration with BMW is THE 8 X JEFF KOONS, a hand-painted limited interpretation of a BMW M850i xDrive. Talking with Painters

Maria Stoljar

Ep 121: Summer Series – Joshua Yeldham

In podcast episode 101 I spoke with leading Australian artist Joshua Yeldham in the lead-up to his sell-out show ‘Providence’ at Arthouse Gallery in Sydney. I remember being fascinated by his approach to painting and his views on the creative process.

We also recorded a separate video and this episode is the first of my 2022 Summer Series which is a collection of extended audio recordings from videos I've taken of my podcast guests.

Joshua's works are extraordinary. His paintings often involve an element of carving into the wooden surface of the work and in some cases he inserts pieces of cane which add a further dimension to the work. But it's the physical method of doing that work which enhances his creative process and you'll hear him explain this and many other aspects of his practice in this episode.

If you're in Sydney you can see several stunning Yeldham works

We talk about his time shooting for the Beaford Archive and developing his eye. He likes dedicating his day to shooting on his stills camera and he only takes iPhone photographs when he’s fishing. We discuss our incredible and collaborative experience working with Damiani, the publishers of BYWAYS. A brush with...

The Art Newspaper

A brush with... Pablo Bronstein

Pablo Bronstein talks to Ben Luke about the art, literature, music, film and much more that have influenced him and inspire him today, and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Bronstein was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1977, but came to the UK as a child and grew up in suburban London. He makes beautifully executed drawings, performances and video works. They reflect on the architecture, design and cultural traditions of mostly pre-20th-century eras and what they tell us about the role of aesthetic taste both when they were made and as we see them today. Pablo’s work is often funny, though with a sardonic edge, but its impact is heightened by the fact that it is also deeply learned—his knowledge of the intricacies, pretensions, quirks and excesses of art, design and architectural history are crucial to the effectiveness and precision of his work. He discusses his early fascination with drawing buildings, his love

The Writing on the Wall

There are new paintings and drawings by Sol LeWitt being made all the time -- even though the artist died in 2007. That’s possible because LeWitt’s wrote instructions for creating his works  art, for other people to make. Abbi and writer Samantha Irby consider a piece by Glenn Ligon that takes a line by Zora Neale Hurston and repeats it over and over -- transforming the text into something new. Plus, Martine Syms tells Abbi why she puts giant letters right on the gallery walls.
Also featuring: Mark Joshua Epstein

The Art Angle

Artnet News

How the Artist Pension Trust Became a Gigantic Fiasco

Everyone knows the dirty little secret of the dog-eat-dog art market, which is that while an artist creates the artwork, the vast majority of the value of that artwork is created—and captured—by others, from the 50 percent that goes to the dealer to the multiples made by the collectors who flip if the artist gets hot.
But what if there was a way for artists to protect themselves from this kind of exploitation, by banding together and pooling their art together into a fund to provide a safety net against the vicissitudes of the market, where all artists—hot and not alike—benefit from the rising values of rising stars? Well, something like that does exist, and it’s called the Artist Pension Trust, which since 2004 has enlisted hundreds of artists behind this common cause.
The only catch? It is apparently too good to be true—at least if you go by the maelstrom of threats of lawsuits, recriminations, and accusations

Karla Huebner, "Magnetic Woman: Toyen and the Surrealist Erotic" (U Pittsburgh Press, 2020)

Karla Huebner’s Magnetic Woman: Toyen and the Surrealist Erotic (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2020) follows the life and career Czech artist Toyen (Marie Čermínová, 1902-1980). Toyen’s career spans the twentieth century, from the cultural flux of interwar Prague to postwar France. Huebner traces the growth, divergence, and fluidity of Czech as well as international avant-gardes. Eroticism, Huebner argues, centered Toyen’s life, settings, and art. Toyen’s ambiguous gender equally found its own place in the predominantly male Czech Devětsil group, lesbian milieus of interwar Paris, and André Breton’s postwar Surrealist network. So too did Toyen’s work in erotic drawings, book commissions, collage, and oil paintings, all generously represented in this monograph. Magnetic Woman hence unites art history with cultural and intellectual history. Huebner analyzes Toyen’s artistic

But since coming of age in Portland’s riot-grrrl scene, July has made a name for herself as a true multi-hyphenate: as an artist, singer, screenwriter, author, Hollywood film director and actress, and more. In this episode, she speaks with Marc Spiegler about writing her first play – based on correspondence with a convicted murderer – to releasing her film Kajillionaire in the midst of the pandemic and the flood of DMs that followed. “My entire experience of the release was those messages,” she recalls. Separately, curator Larry Ossei-Mensah talks to Jon Gray, a cofounder of the activist cooking collective Ghetto Gastro, about food as a device for social change and branching out into the world of art.

Conflict photography of the past twenty years is a subject we have discussed in previous episodes with photographers, psychologists, and scholars, but our very welcomed guest, photographer Peter van Agtmael adds his well-articulated thoughts on the subject, including his own motivations and challenges while covering the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the ramifications of those wars here in the United States and elsewhere. Kenneth O'Reilly, "Asphalt: A History" (U Nebraska Press, 2021)

In Asphalt: A History (U Nebraska Press, 2021), Kenneth O’Reilly provides a history of this everyday substance. By tracing the history of asphalt—in both its natural and processed forms—from ancient times to the present, O’Reilly sets out to identify its importance within various contexts of human society and culture. Although O’Reilly argues that asphalt creates our environment, he believes it also eventually threatens it. Looking at its role in economics, politics, and global warming, O’Reilly explores asphalt’s contribution to the history, and future, of America and the world.

'Art Is...' a podcast for artists

Isotta Page

We are brainstorming the future of the art world. On Art Is… Isotta Page encourages other emerging artists, students and early-career creatives to collectively visualize the future of the art world and the creative industries. Season 1 is a narrative miniseries—7 short monologues designed to spark your interest and introduce you to creative knowledge tools, emerging tech, innovative business models, and alternative mindsets impacting artists today. Season 2 revisits each theme from Season 1 through conversations with creative thought leaders, emerging artists, and change-makers in the tech industry, design world and startup space. Season 3 follows the theme 'artists leveraging tech' and dives into new ideas around digital strategy and leadership for artists and creatives. We also return to topics from past seasons including: learning from beyond the traditional art world (especially startup and design spaces), exploring alternative business models and investigating the opportunities presented by emerging tech (NFT's, Metaverse, Web 3 and more! ). Art Is... seeks to destigmatize storytelling, break down barriers between creative disciplines, and embolden artists to broaden their perspectives by learning from other industries. On the podcast, we push back against traditional art world norms to gain agency over our art careers and work to build a creative community that will change the landscape of contemporary art and beyond. We discussed 4 paintings in depth: "Three Dryads," "Fire Watcher," "Dryads and Pollinators (Moths)" and "Dryads and Pollinators (Birds)" all 2021, and also learned about Jennifer's advice to "Be the Hero" in the studio when you feel stuck or demoralized, and about channeling Kirsten Dunst in "Melancholia" 2011 when you want to be brave in your work. Also, we spoke about the interesting parallels of being an artist and a musician, as Jennifer is an accomplished fiddle/violin player.

Giving and Receiving Feedback

Feedback is the topic of conversation this week on Thriving Women Artists. We all want to know people’s honest opinions and what we can potentially work on improving. Join Ping, Sarah and Dorien as they discuss why feedback is important, how to give it, when to give it, and a little bit of their own experiences.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Feedback can be educated or uneducated, it can be a reaction or it can be thought out. It can cover the whole spectrum of critical to positive. Don’t just think about what they are saying, look at who is saying it and why.

You can also get feedback on the process around your work. If you’re working with clients they may give this, or in some cases give no feedback at all, it happens.

Always remember to ask yourself what is the purpose for you wanting feedback and who are you getting feedback from. Are they the right person who can help you know what

Risk, Rejection, and Resilience with Christine Aaron (#114)

Risk is scary. Rejection stinks. Resilience seems elusive. When I think of these three R words, the word practice comes to mind. Taking one step at a time over and over again because we know it is the only way to make big progress. In order to embrace risk, we have to practice. We step into it, try it on, and, almost always, discover that it isn’t as bad as the soundtrack we were playing in our heads. Rejection is also a practice. We build up emotional muscles after receiving disappointing news. After years of accumulated rejections, we begin to understand that they are rarely, if ever, personal. And finally, resilience is something we have to work at. We were born resilient, but, over the years, life beat us up. But rejections give us courage muscles we never had before. And, because we paid attention, we pick up on a number of tools that help us become more resilient. My guest for this episode of The Art Biz is Ch

How Limitations can Boost Your Creativity [149]

In this episode, we explore limitations. When - and why - is it a good idea to place limits on your work? First, we discuss the benefits of limiting ourselves in some way. That might mean limiting colours or setting rules for a certain body of work; it might mean keeping everything to one size; or it could mean limiting the media we use. But whatever parameters we set, limits can open up our creativity. The we look at the flip side - where might we benefit from challenging our limitations? What do we believe that might not be true? We hope this free-ranging discussion will help you to assess where limitations might fit into your practice.

Creating Space to Dream with Yvette Mayorga

Today on Clay in Color, we chat with Yvette Mayorga. She creates ceramic sculptures and acrylic paintings that resemble delectable cakes and pastries that subversively critique the idea of the American Dream. In our interview, we talk about Mayorga’s discovery of Rococo excess through Catholic decorativeness, embracing rasquachismo through unexpected materials and strategies, and her intentional use of pink as an exploration of expectations of femininity. We also discuss how she uses self-adornment as a form of expression in her personal life, which is transferred iconographically to her work. Furthermore, we discuss the fallacy of the American Dream and how she hopes to create spaces for dreaming.   Skutt is a proud sponsor of Clay in Color. Understanding Why a Harvard Museum Will Return Standing Bear’s Tomahawk

Something incredible happened a few months ago. After Oklahoma lawyer Brett Chapman (Pawnee) started tweeting about the tomahawk of Ponca Chief Standing Bear, which is currently in Harvard University’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the revered object may actually be going home. His short messages asked why the tomahawk was in the care of that institution and not with one of the two federally recognized Ponca tribes. The questions raised eyebrows, and as Cassie Packard reported for Hyperallergic, the museum later posted a statement on its website explaining that the museum and the Ponca tribe are “in active discussion about the homecoming of Chief Standing Bear’s pipe tomahawk belonging to the Ponca people.”Chapman, who has Ponca heritage, joins me for this podcast to explain the history of the tomahawk and why the return of the heirloom is important.Subscribe to

Epis.310: Sydney Croskery, Los Angeles artist

In part 1 of 2 with Los Angeles-based painter Sydney Croskery, she talks about: transitioning from representation to abstraction during pandemic lockdown; transitional imagery which included using buffering Instagram screen shots as a source for her painting; making it OK when things are ‘wrong’ in the painting, part of a mandate of being nice to herself; her ambivalent relationship with abstract painting and being an abstract painter, and how she’s navigating that conflict; and her effectiveness telling stories and connecting with artists and other art world folks on Instagram.

Van Gogh Light Shows: A Roundtable

If you live in or have visited a major city over the past year, chances are you've come across some version of the various new "immersive" "Van Gogh" "experiences." Staged by for-profit companies and marketed heavily on Facebook, these "environments" promise to bring audiences closer to the beloved paintings of Vincent Van Gogh through the magic of digital enlargement, animation, and projection.

In this episode, Sarah and Tina are joined by Swagato Chakravorty, a fellow at the Philadelphia Museum of Art whose doctoral work in art history and film and media studies focused on the history of screens. Together, they attempt to get to the bottom of just what makes these experiences so appealing to audiences, and how we might think about them as aspects of visual culture related to ideas in art history, instead of just dismissing them as unsatisfying reproductions outright.

18de eeuw: prentmaker Maria Catharina Prestel

Episode 115 Over Coffee: How to Get Back to Your Why

Season 4 is over! We can’t believe it! Thank you to our Patrons who have made it possible for us to keep making this podcast. In our last episode of Season 4, we reflected on what went well and what didn’t last year, as well as what kind of changes we’re planning on making for the podcast and our paper flower businesses. We agree that our big focus for 2022 is getting back to the why: the heart of why we keep wanting to be paper florists and share our love of paper flower making.  We highly recommend taking time like we did on the podcast to reflect on your challenges and triumphs. But who has the time or energy for that? You can find the space in your mind to ask these difficult questions. Here are just a few ideas we shared on the episode. Find Space to ReflectIf you’re overwhelmed with your work, you won’t have the ability to think deeply or widely about where your paper flower business is and where you want it to be.

Episode 28: Rodney Ewing w/ Guest Host Cindy Shih (United States) - "Stories That Don't Get Told"

"While debating demanding topics such as race, religion, or war, it is simple enough to become polarized, and see situations in either black or white, right or wrong. These tactics may satisfy individuals whose position depends on employing policies or implementing strategies that promote specific agendas for a specific constituency. As an artist, it is more important to create a platform that moves us past alliances, and begins a dialogue that informs, questions, and in some cases even satires our divisive issues. Without this type of introspection, we are in danger of having apathy rule our senses. We can easily succumb to a national mob mentality, and ignore individual accounts and memories. With my work I am creating an intersection where body and place, memory and fact, are merged to reexamine human interactions and cultural conditions to create a narrative

DJI recently released its "GoPro killer" - the DJI Osmo Action. I've been using this camera for about a week now - so how does it stack up to the GoPro Hero7 Black? Both do 4k video and 12 megapixel stills. Both have incredible image stabilization (with a slight edge to the Osmo). But what about timelapse, hyperlaps and the other features action cameras are now expected to have? We'll take a look in this video.

I’ve been quiet on social media lately but I have been working on something really important - making art fun again! The studio has had a makeover, new art supplies have been ordered and ALL my sketchbooks are out!! Plus, Richie and I have been having some BIG ol' chats about the future direction of the podcast and art biz in general.
With a new year coming, it’s time for a change. In this week’s episode, we look back on the last year and talk about the changes we are making to bring more creativity and fun into our lives as we head into 2022. This includes a change in the way that we approach the podcast.
As it’s the last episode of the year, we also want to thank you for your support and wish you a happy festive season!

Artists Among Us

Whitney Museum of American Art

The Whitney Museum of American Art presents Artists Among Us, a podcast about American art and culture. We tell stories revealing the complexities and contradictions that have shaped life in the United States today. We consider the American artist David Hammons and his new sculpture, Day's End (2014–21). This is a monumental, permanent public installation that pays tribute to a long-destroyed 1975 artwork of the same name by the artist Gordon Matta-Clark. Anchored on the banks of Manhattan’s West Side and stretching into the Hudson River, Hammons’s Day’s End is sited next to the Museum and occupies the precise location where Matta-Clark’s work once stood. We follow the evolution of the Manhattan coastline through the history of the Meatpacking District, and celebrate the communities that have shaped the neighborhood where the Whitney now stands. This podcast was produced by Sound Made Public in collaboration with the Whitney Museum of American Art.

You Need Art

Cindy Ingram

This is not just another podcast about art. Art is more than a creative outlet or something to study in art history. Art is a catalyst for self-improvement, a tool for understanding the human spirit, and a way to find your path. Through art conversations and in-depth explorations of artworks, this art podcast might just change your life. Join your host, Cindy Ingram—the founder of Art Class Curator, the Curated Connections Library, and the Art Connection Circle—as she explores the life connections waiting to be discovered in works of art and dives deep into the connections others see in interviews and art conversations. We live in a world that overstimulates our senses but often ignores our needs. With an unending feed of bright lights, loud noises, and information both true and false, it feels like the scroll never ends. Despite the fact that our feeds are constantly live and updating, our souls are not being fed. We need creative thinking, true communication, and genuine connection to ourselves and others—that’s where art comes in. You Need Art is an art podcast about using art as a way to find your truth, know yourself, and discover the path you were meant to walk in life. Remember, the most important part of an artwork is you.
