This is video #110 in my playthrough of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. This video does not contain commentary. To view the commentary version, click here: https://youtu.be/FmeGW1z3zic

Madason and his family have wrapped up their victory tour with a visit to Stockenbarrel. Now, it is finally time to head home.

So, after a bit of a roundabout flight, the Zenith Dragon drops them off at Gotha (time 0:48). On the lower floor, they can find the townspeople. Some of their monstrous party members will also be chowing down. Even Dr Agon is here!

After touring the rest of the castle, they will have to talk to their loyal friend Sancho in front of the throne room doors (time 14:48).

Then, they will have to go in the throne room to start the final scene (time 15:51). Lovely use of the Dragon Quest theme. It is punctuated by words from two who have gone on before them. Then, we get to hear the lovely wedding waltz again.

Afterwards, we view the game's credits (time 17:46). During the credits, we are treated to scenes that occured throughout the game, starting with Madason and Pankraz's arrival at Littlehaven all those years ago.

When you reach the screen with "Fin" ("The End"), you have to hit a button to get to the save screen. By making a save, you can access postgame content, including a bonus dungeon.

Overall, this is one great game. It has an amazing story, especially for the DQ series, following one character through tragedy and triumph in three stages of life. Despite all that happens to him or his loved ones, he pulls through with the silent conviction of Dragon Quest protagonists. (Unlike characters in a certain other JRPG series that I like...) Getting to choose your wife and fight alongside your children is a nice touch. It is loaded with good story characters.

The game's music is also amazing. The overworld theme is one of my favorite in the series, as is the sailing theme. The wedding waltz is a gorgeous piece of music in its own right. The flying theme can't compare to the Godbird theme, but it's still good.

As far as gameplay, the monster-recruiting mechanic is pretty interesting, and it helps add to this game's replay value. Essentially, during the second part of the game, the protagonist's only support characters will be recruited monsters between Coburg and Stockenbarrel, and then again in the hellish Knightmare Towers. He does not have full-time human support until his kids join him. Even then, monsters such as the Golem will still be useful for their attack power and abilities. Only certain monsters such as Healslimes learn the Omniheal spell. Still, the kids make good battle characters. Sancho not so much, but he gets some good out-of-battle support abilities.

Of course, after Psaro the Manslayer in the previous game, Grandmaster Nimzo is a bit of a pansy. But he can still pose a challenge, unlike some final Final Fantasy bosses. (Ahem ... Ultimecia, anyone?)

In all, this is one of my favorite games in the series, and I hope you take the time to play it. It is perhaps my second favorite after Dragon Quest VIII. I'm glad that we finally got it, even though it is the DS version and not the PS2 version.

This playthrough is not over yet, as I intend to continue with the post-completion content.

Thanks for watching!
